Monster

Plan

Reflection

Photos

To create my monster, I first looked at the picture I was given, and then started with the torso, arms, legs, and head. After making all of those, I hollowed out them all and carefully slipped and scored them each onto the torso. I then fired it and glazed it.

Reflecting on this piece, there isn't much I would do differently, I feel like the only issue is the chipped off pieces, I'm not too sure what happened inside the kiln, perhaps a piece next to it exploded, other than that it looked good.

Alebrije

Plan

Reflection

For planning this piece, I first looked up keystone species. I looked for a while for an animal that both seemed cool, and fit my skill level to make. I made the base (clay dome), and after
I plan to make paper spikes with LED lights lighting up the sea urchin.

Reflecting on this piece, I believe that I did pretty well. I haven't finished the whole thing, (paper/LEDs). Now having finished it, I didn't really think about how I was going to put on the spikes, but I figured it out with hot glue. I think I did pretty good on this project and can't wait to present it.

Series of 4

Plan

Reflection

Photos

Originally, I was going to try and create 4 plates. That project did not go to plan. After that, I thought of doing 4 shot glasses. I got a sample mold and created them equally, to
the best of my ability. I then fired them all and glazed them with a tree design on the bottom of each.

Reflecting on these pieces, I believe that I did pretty well. The one thing I wish went differently, is being able to make 4 plates, but I also like the glasses. I really like the glaze design I did on this one, I have never done that before and I think it is very cool.

Lidded box

Plan

Reflection

Photos

For this project, I got a flat, square slab. I then cut out a bottom for the box, then 2 sets of equal sides. I then scored and slipped the sides onto the bottom, and made a lid for it. I took some inspiration from an already done box on the shelf, making a ball and scoring and slipping it on as a handle.

Reflecting on this piece, it went perfect. No mishaps, no restarting, I really wouldn't have done anything different on this piece.

Choice (plate)

Plan

As I said for the series of 4, I have really wanted to do this plate for a while. I started out by making a slab, then cutting it into the shape of a plate and putting it in the mold. I then let it firm up in the mold and smoothed it out with a sponge.

Reflecting on this piece, it could've gotten done a little sooner. I kind of forgot about this piece for a while, it took a long time from being clay to getting fired. I am really happy I finally got it done though, I have been trying to do this since mid November. Also, happy how it turned out.

Practical Piece (mug)

Plan

Reflection

Photos

For this piece, I wanted to make a different style of mug than I had
made in the past. In the past, I made
a slab with darts, and a more bowl shaped one. For this, I wanted to go a bit more simplistic, but also good quality. I made the slab, then cut out
a piece for the bottom, then scored and slipped the handle on.

I feel like this piece was really well thought out and put together. I had the idea in my head to just do a slab-style mug, then made it happen for real. This is a replacement gift for my mom after the other mug I made her broke.

Second Mug

Plan

I made this piece right after my choice mug, so a very similar process to that. First cutting out the slab and making it into a cylinder. After that, I slipped the handle onto the cylinder and made the bottom. I then spun it on a little blue wheel to smooth out cracks, holes, etc. I plan to glaze it, I'm not sure what color to do.

This piece went perfectly. I had the foundation to make a mug already, after the other one. One slight problem with this though, is that it is a little smaller than the other mug. This isn't bad, but maybe I would use a little more clay next time.

Choice Bowl

Plan

For this project, I just did a simple slump mold. It was very similar to the slump molds I did in semester 1. This project was really only done because I was finished with everything else early. This was a nice break from the Pueblo Style Coil Vessel, that project took a while.

This piece really has nothing wrong with it, I would've done the exact same thing if I made it again. I am happy I made this because we have very few bowls at home, so now we will have another one after this gets glazed and fired again.

Pueblo Style Coil Vessel

Plan

For this piece, I was done with everything else, so I started this early.
I first looked up pictures of a Pueblo Style Coil Vessel. Then I extruded some clay, and started going up with the coils in a vase shape. I then continued with this over multiple classes, and then I got to the part with the two heads. For this, I made a circle of clay and put it over the vase shape, and scored and slipped it on. I then cut 2 holes in the circle, and started going up with the 2 heads. Then, I got a slab, cut it to size, and connected the 2 heads.

This might be my most impressive work yet. I really put my all into this project and made sure to take my time over multiple classes. I plan to paint it with a native american style pattern, then give this to my grandma. I really can't believe I did this, last time I tried to coil build it did not go well.

Clay Bust

Plan

For this project, I started by just making a basic bust, then I figured out the character I wanted to do. I then looked at reference photos of that character, and used the video you showed to us. I then underglazed it and clear glazed it.

Reflection

Forget about what I said for the coil vessel, this is definitely my favorite and best project to date. Obviously I put a lot of time into this, spending over a month worth of classes on it. I cannot overstate how well I did on this project. I also plan to give it to my friend for his birthday, it is one of his favorite characters in fiction.

Teapot

Plan

For this project, I watched a YouTube video on how to make a teapot using clay, and then went at this. I started by making a pinch pot, then making the lid, handles, and spout. I put a filter in the spout to minimize tea leaves from entering the tea cup
when pouring.

Reflection

This piece I didn't really love. I ended up scrapping it eventually, and it really wasn't my best work. I would have loved to give this to my mom or grandma, but unfortunately I didn't feel like keeping this. I might remake it in the future, but for now this is what happened.

Hanging Mask

Plan

For this project, I originally didn't really know what to make. I took some inspiration from the numerous masks hanging above the glazes, and eventually landed on this stereotypical alien. First I rolled a slab, then cut it out with a fettling knife, then carved some places out and began underglazing.

Reflection

This piece is simple, yet awesome. I really like the idea of an alien, and I think once I clear glaze it it will be even better. I feel like I put in a moderate amount of effort into this piece, and wouldn't do anything different if I went back and restarted.

Mug for Music Festival

Plan

For this project, I first made the mug with my existing knowledge, then used the example I saw when I was absent. The underglazing process went smooth, I first underglazed the whole thing black, then went for the Matrix design.

Reflection

This piece is really cool in my opinion. I am excited to sell it at the Music Festival and I feel like I worked hard on it. The words were a little hard to paint on, but they got done after a few tries. I like the simplistic design I chose because its hard for me to work with underglaze to make complex designs.

Vessel for Current Artist Inspired

Plan

For this project, I started looking on the internet for a cool current artist. I landed on Gunilla Maria Åkesson, I like her simple, yet artistic vessels. I specifically like her Vessel no. 53 from 2019, and I think I can replicate it with the jungle glazes we have.

Reflection

This piece went well, I did have to restart and go with a pinch pot instead of a slab, but other than that I think it went great. I think I captured her style pretty well with this.
