Semester 2 Goals

What I have learned so far: Last semester, I learned a lot about ceramics. From simple things like how to wedge clay and how important it is, to more complex things like coil building and how to use a slump mold to make a bowl. I know how to plan something either in my head or on a piece of paper. I feel like I have a basic understanding of ceramics.

What I would like to learn: This semester, I want to learn how to throw on a wheel. From the very first time I saw someone do it in class, it always appealed to me. Seeing them make such perfect, smooth objects. I want to specifically make a series of bowls I can use at my house. I have one I made a while ago, but I really want that flawless style of bowl you might actually buy. Maybe someday I could make ceramics and sell them. I am also really excited to make the small bust this semester. I think it seems cool, and it might prove as a challenge to me in a good, constructive way.

Teapot

Plan

For this project, I watched a YouTube video on how to make a teapot using clay, and then went at this. I started by making a pinch pot, then making the lid, handles, and spout. I put a filter in the spout to minimize tea leaves from entering the tea cup
when pouring.

Reflection

This piece I didn't really love. I ended up scrapping it eventually, and it really wasn't my best work. I would have loved to give this to my mom or grandma, but unfortunately I didn't feel like keeping this. I might remake it in the future, but for now this is what happened.

Hanging Mask

Plan

For this project, I originally didn't really know what to make. I took some inspiration from the numerous masks hanging above the glazes, and eventually landed on this stereotypical alien. First I rolled a slab, then cut it out with a fettling knife, then carved some places out and began underglazing.

Reflection

This piece is simple, yet awesome. I really like the idea of an alien, and I think once I clear glaze it it will be even better. I feel like I put in a moderate amount of effort into this piece, and wouldn't do anything different if I went back and restarted.

Mug for Music Festival

Plan

For this project, I first made the mug with my existing knowledge, then used the example I saw when I was absent. The underglazing process went smooth, I first underglazed the whole thing black, then went for the Matrix design.

Reflection

This piece is really cool in my opinion. I am excited to sell it at the Music Festival and I feel like I worked hard on it. The words were a little hard to paint on, but they got done after a few tries. I like the simplistic design I chose because its hard for me to work with underglaze to make complex designs.

Vessel for Current Artist Inspired

Plan

For this project, I started looking on the internet for a cool current artist. I landed on Gunilla Maria Åkesson, I like her simple, yet artistic vessels. I specifically like her Vessel no. 53 from 2019, and I think I can replicate it with the jungle glazes we have.

Reflection

This piece went well, I did have to restart and go with a pinch pot instead of a slab, but other than that I think it went great. I think I captured her style pretty well with this.
